Frommer's Review

Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Portland is this 1794 lighthouse, easily one of the most picturesque in the nation. The light marks the entrance to Portland Harbor, and was occupied continuously from its construction until 1989, when it was automated and the graceful keeper's house (1891) converted to a small museum. Still active, the lighthouse is closed to the public, but visitors can stop by the museum, wander the grounds, and watch sailboats and cargo ships come and go. The park has a pebble beach, grassy lawns, and picnic areas well suited for informal barbecues.
